Role of the Administrator
1. Become knowledgeable about character education. See Books
and Resources.
2. Become an advocate for it.
3. Provide staff development and in-service training.
See article on Staff Development. Go over the
Code of Ethics each year.
4. Appoint a character education team. Give them a
mission and timetable. See School-wide planning and
programming.
5. Hold the team accountable to you.
6. Model values with other administrators, teachers, students and parents.
7. Bring in a consultant or mentor to help your school
with character education.
8. Add character traits to Teacher Evaluations.
9. Involve students in governance and decision-making.
10. Find ways to address the community.
11. Be an advocate with parents.
12. Encourage character education in curriculum writing.
13. Make a school-wide behavior plan (See
discipline) that fosters character development,
especially in shared spaces.
